Capt. R G Shinkle, 70, well known river man, is seriously ill at
his home, 317 Berry av. Bellevue, with cancer of the throat. He has not been
able to take food for some hours, and stimulants have to be administered
hypodermically.
He was born in Philadelphia and moved to Newport when he was 11 years old. He was cabin boy, pilot and master of several large steamers from Cincinnati to New Orleans He was married in 1869. He is Secretary of the Pilots Association of Cincinnati and has been prominent in Campbell County politics. He moved to Bellevue in 1882.

Capt. R G Shinkle, died at his home, 317 Berry av. Bellevue at 8 pm Friday. For nearly a month he had not tasted food, the cause being cancer of the throat. He was 70 years old and had been Secretary of the Pilot's Association of Cincinnati. He leaves a widow and one son, Eugene Shinkle. Capt. Shinkle was a stanch Democrat and had been prominent in Campbell County politics. He was at one time Chairman of the Democratic Campaign Committee. He rose from cabin boy to pilot and master of some of the largest river steamers between Cincinnati and New Orleans.
He was born in Philadelphia and came to Newport when 11 years old. He had resided in Bellevue since 1882. Capt. Shinkle was married in1869.
The funeral will take place from the home tomorrow at 1:30. The pallbearers will be Capt. Ben Merrieles, Paris C Brown, Gus Autenheimer, George Emig, Charles W Yungblut, Harry Dawes. The interment will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.
