NEWPORT GI HAS CLOSE CALL-With the 24th Infantry Div. in Korea-You can't make Pvt. Roland Bergman of Newport, Ky. wear a field chacket hood for love nor money. Ever since Bergman had a narrow excape in combat, he's been hood-shy.
While rushing enemy hilltop positions in Korea recently with his unit, Bergman had trouble with his hood. It kept flapping in his face. A grenade thrown by the Reds bounced off his helmet during the charge and Bergman felt something land in his hood. His heart sank when he reached inside his hood and felt a grenade there.
Luckily Bergman had time to grab the grenade and throw it away from him before it exploded. But the Kentucky soldier goes into combat without the hood now.
