Robert B and Mary Ann McCracken
Robert B McCracken was born in 1813 in Ireland and immigrated to
the United States settling in Campbell County. His wife Mary Ann Davis was born
in 1823 in Mason Co Kentucky. They married 4 July 1847 in Mason Co Ky.
Robert McCracken was a brick mason but was also a Newport mayor from 1862 to
1866. He served in the
Washington Fire Engine and Hose Company No 1. Robert died 22 Nov 1867
in Newport and was buried in the Newport Cemetery (now Evergreen) in Southgate.

NEWPORT NEWS
THE MAYOR OF NEWPORT SUSPENDED-By an order from Lieutenant Colonel Wm B Sipes, Military Commandant of Covington and Newport, Robert McCracken is suspended from all official authority as Mayor of the City of Newport, and the civil jurisdiction of said City is placed under the control of W J Berry, Provost Marshal. Mayor McCracken is charged with "arresting and fining a citizen for tearing down a rebel flag, publicly displaced; and also with expressing sentiments disloyal and disrespectful to the military authorities of the United States."
The case was investigated before Colonel Sipes, yesterday and we learn that it is probably Mr. McCracken will be reinstated into office today.

NEWPORT NEWS
MAYOR'S PROCLAMATION-In accordance with the proclamation of Gov Bramlette, recommending a total suspension of business throughout Kentucky toady, Mayor McCracken calls upon the citizens of Newport to close their places of business. The keepers of coffee houses in particular, are notified to suspend operations.

NEWPORT
THE MAYOR OF THE CITY ARRESTED-R B McCracken, Mayor of the city, was arrested on Thursday evening, upon a warrant sworn out by Constable C C Harris, charging him with rescuing a prisoner from the custody of the law. It seems that Harris had arrested and lodged in jail, a man named Hayes, on the charge of committing a breach of the peace. The Mayor, being willing to make himself responsible for the appearance of the prisoner, went to the jail and ordered his release.
This proceeding Constable Harris thought was illegal. He accordingly procured a warrant and arrested the Mayor as stated above, taking him before Esquire Ladd for examination. The latter decided that he had no jurisdiction of the case and dismissed it, which we presume ends the matter.
