NEWPORT
Robert Hewitson, 70, a veteran of the Civil War, residing at
Eighth and Monmouth streets, was struck and probably fatally injured by an
incoming L and N passenger train at Eleventh and Monmouth streets, about 4
o'clock yesterday afternoon. Hewitson was run down after he had passed under the
crossing gates. He was removed to his home in the patrol wagon.
His injuries included a fracture of the skull and hemorrhages from the nose and ears. On account of his advanced age it is fearful that his injuries will prove fatal. Hewitson is one of the best known of the veterans of Newport.
