Sunday afternoon a Newport boy, Rempt (sic) Hillard Hidden, 37, who lived with his widowed mother at 721 Central av. Newport, was drowned. He is foreman of the W B Carpenter printing establishment, Cincinnati and after working hard all week decided to enjoy his half holiday by taking a launch ride up the Ohio River with several other men. He bade his mother farewell and departed. He never returned alive.
Her grief is pitable. The party, six in number was above Coney Island in a launch owned by Geo Jennings. The launch ran against the dike and in attempting to rock the boat loose they capsized it. The other men held on tothe overturned boat, but Hidden was swept away to death by the swift current. The men managed to reach the shore and after recovering repaired to Newport to inform Hiddens mother of her sons fate. A searching party was out yesterday looking for his body. This mornign a reward of $25 was offered for it.
