The funeral services of Major Paul T Quattlebaum, of Columbus Ga. were held yesterday afternoon at St Paul P E Church, Newport, conducted by Rev W M Pettis, the rector. Major Quattlebaum will be remembered by many of the residents of this city when he was stationed at the Barracks upon his exit from West Point, as a Second Lieutenant in the army. This was a few years before the beginning of the war.
Joining his regiment in the far Northwest where he served faithfully until 1861. He resigned his position to join the Confederacy at the breaking out of the war. He received the position of Major in the Confederate army and was conspicuous in the sea defense of Mobile. After the close of the war he was for some years engaged in cotton planting in Georgia, but in recent years employed as Assistant Engineer in charge of the Government improvement of the Chattahoochee River.
His remains were placed in the Evergreen Cemetery, near Newport, to reposed beside those of his deceased children. The pall bearers at his funeral were John w Stevenson Jr. Colonel R W Nelson, A F Green, Colonel Pence, John C Benton, John B Taylor, Charles Helm and Frank P Helm.
