H Keene
Philip H Keene was born 26 June 1845 in Newport, the son of John Keene and Catherine Konig. He enlisted in the Civil War as a Private on 3 Oct 1861 with the 23rd Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. He did garrison and guard duty in southern Kentucky and middle Tennessee from January to August 1862. Next he was at Round Mountain, near Woodbury, Tennessee, on August 27. Philip marched to Louisville Kentucky, in pursuit of Bragg, September 1–26. His unit stayed in Tennessee until Apr 1864 and then participated in the Atlanta campaign with Sherman. He was at the Battle of Jonesboro, Nashville, Huntsville Ala. Bulls Gap, New Orleans and Texas. Philip was discharged 3 Feb 1866.
He married Florence Rose, daughter of Albert Rose and Hattie May, after the war. The family lived in Newport for many years before he retired to Ft Thomas. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery.

Philip H Keene, veteran mail carrier of Newport, died yesterday at his residence, 34 Villa pl. in the Highlands after a short illness of pneumonia. Keene was the oldest mail carrier in Newport and prior to his death had charge of the rural route in the Highlands.
A widow and two daughters, Mrs. Joe Hoyle and Melva Keene survive. Keene was a member of the Twenty-third Regular Army during the Civil War and served throughout the entire conflict with distinction. He was a member of Robert Burns Lodge, F and A M of Newport, which organization will have charge of the funeral which will be held Wednesday afternoon.
