Peter and Mary Conway
Peter Conway was born about 1815 in
Pennsylvania and was a steamboat captain who resided in Newport along with his
wife, Mary also from Pennsylvania. He was listed in the 1860 census in Newport.

A Citizen of Newport in Limbo-The Louisville
Journal of yesterday has the following;
A man named Peter Conway was arraigned before the City Court yesterday on the charge of kidnapping a number of slaves. Conway is a resident of Newport, Kentucky, and had been sent to Columbus, Kentucky, by a Cincinnati firm on business. Conway, it seems, overstepped the boundaries of his legitimate business, and brought off by the steamer Coal Hill, a party of twelve negroes, ten of whom were found secreted in a barge, which was towed up by the Coal Hill, two of the party having escaped before the officers made a descent upon the boat.
The negroes are evidently slaves, and it was
Conway's design, doubtless, to set them at liberty when he reached Cincinnati.
In the absence of witnesses, the case was continued until Friday morning,
Conway
being remanded to jail.

NEWPORT NEWS
A Citizen of Newport is in Limbo-Peter Conway,
who claims to be a resident of this city, is in jail in Louisville, charged with
kidnapping twelve slaves from Columbus, Ky. The negroes were found secreted in
the hold of the steamer Coal Hill, while the boat was lying at the Louisville
wharf.

NEWPORT
Sold-The ferry boat Covington was sold by Captain C G Pearce, day before yesterday, to Captain John Williamson, of the Newport Ferry, for $2500.
FERRY MEETING-Another meeting of citizens opposed to the present ferry rates, was held at the Court house on Wednesday night. Mr. Samuel Cummings in the chair. The committee appointed at a previous meeting to ascertain whether it would be legal to establish another ferry, reported that they had not fully investigated the subject yet, and asked for further time, which was granted. The various ward committees appointed to solicit subscription took stock in the proposed new ferry company reported that they were making good progress in the matter in the Fifth Ward alone.
It was stated that $1000 had been subscribed.
A resolution was adopted instructed
Captain Peter Conway,
to purchase the ferry boat Covington, but we learn that when he
waited upon Captain Pearce yesterday morning for that purpose, he ascertained
that Captain Williamson had stolen a march upon the "anti-ferry monopolists" by
purchasing the boat the day before. Another meeting will be held at the
Court house on Saturday night, when the Committee on Law will be ready to
report.
