HIGHLANDS
P H Wilson, a pioneer resident of Campbell County, died late
yesterday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. J M Shaw, in the Highlands.
Wilson was born in Kanawha County, W Va. 83 years ago and located in Newport
when quite a young man. He was engaged in the building business and many of the
older buildings of the city, public and private were constructed by him.
When Ft Thomas was projected, he was engaged to superintend the construction of the buildings. So well pleased was the Quartermaster with the work that Wilson was taken to Key West Fla. Ft Wingate, NM and Columbus O. to superintend work for the War Department. In 1903 he had charge of the construction of a cavalry hospital post at Des Moines, Ia.
Wilson helped charter of Newport and was a pioneer in the building association work. During the hard times of 1876-1877 he was President of a relief union to care for the unfortunate poor. He was a Director of the Newport and Covington Bridge at the time the present structure was erected. He was a charter member of Taylor st. M E Church. He leaves a widow and two children, Mrs. J M Shaw and Mrs. L H Wilson and 13 grandchildren.
