NEWPORT SOLDIER GETS BRONZE STAR-A Newport infantryman has been decorated with a Bronze Star medal for "meritorious achievement" against the Germans in France and Germany in the period between July 4, 1944 and March 25, 1945. A participant in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, S Sgt. Nicholas J Ciafardini, 29, won the award while serving with the Ninth Army. His division was the first to cross the President Truman Bridge across the Elbe River which was thrown up in record time by Army Engineers to enable the chase of the German armies.
The brother of Mrs. Pat Greco, of 210 Main avenue, Newport, he has been in the Army, since June 24, 1941, and overseas 14 months. His brother, S Sgt Patrick Ciafardini, has returned to this country after four years in the South Pacific. He is a member of the famed Marine First Division and was among the troops to make the initial landing on Guadalcanal. He fought in four other major engagements with the leathernecks.
