George M and Anna Pagan
Information comes from records submitted
to the Campbell County Historical Society by Robert Douglas Ferguson, great
grandson of James Pagan.
George M Pagan was born in Dumfries, Scotland in 20 Aug 1821 to
James and Elizabeth (Addie) Pagan. He immigrated to the United States with his
mother later than the first part of his family. His father had arrived in New York 1 Aug 1837 on the ship Mattakeeset
having left Liverpool England. James came with his daughter Mary Agnes, age 16
and son Robert, age 18. After George arrived in Cincinnati he married Anna
Dennison in 1848. She was born in Liverpool England in Oct 1824, the daughter of Daniel Dennison.
James Pagan Sr. was born 25 Nov 1782 in Dumfries, Scotland, the son of Robert Pagan and died in Newport after 1860 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery. Elizabeth (Addie) Pagan was born 2 Oct 1787 in Dumfries, Scotland and died in Newport in 1850 and was buried also in Evergreen. Her headstone states: 1787-1850
George and Anna moved to Newport by 1850 and by 1856 he had his own glazier shop and was a house and sign painter. He and his father were listed in the Newport City Directory of 1857 as painters.
His brother James N Pagan Jr. was born Aug 1828
in Dumfries, Scotland, and his wife, Mary Elisabeth Bassett, daughter of Thomas
Bassett, and family immigrated by 1870 from Melbourne Australia and settled in
Newport also. Mary Elisabeth Bassett was born in Melbourne 24 May 1846, died 18
May 1928 and was buried in Evergreen. On November 17, 1881 James was
elected to Newport City Council representing Ward 6, replacing E C Stricker.
James was buried 16 June 1904 in Evergreen
Cemetery.

2. George M Pagan Jr. b-14 Aug 1851 in Newport; married Sallie Lorain Weaver
14 Aug 1877; George was a house painter in 1880 and a county assessor in the
1880s. He died 3 Feb 1912, and was buried at Evergreen.
3. James Douglas Pagan b-1 May 1852 in Newport; James was a house painter in
1880. He married Helen Agnes Pagan, his first cousin. He died 17 Feb 1932 in
Kenton Co.
4. Walter Scott Pagan b-10 Mar 1855 in Newport; m-Susan W Howard; he died 25 June 1921 in Dodge
City, Kansas and was buried 28 June in Evergreen.
5. Charles Stewart Pagan b-1858 in Newport; died 20 Dec 1898 in Chicago, Ill.
and was buried there in the Rose Hill Cemetery.
6. Elisabeth Isabel Pagan b-Jan 1860 in Newport; m-Edward T Williams; died 2 Jan 1940 in Carroll
County,
Ky.

8. William Wallace Pagan b-5 July 1864 in Newport; married Frances A Reichart; he died 11 Mar 1939 in Ft. Thomas and was buried in Evergreen. Frances
died 13 Mar 1950.

NEWPORT
COUNCILMAN GEORGE PAGAN was awakened about four o'clock night before last by the noise of burglars in his house. On discovering that they had alarmed the inmates, the rascals beat a hasty retreat, carrying with them a shirt and a pair of pants belonging to Mr. Pagan.
Fearing an animated pursuit they dropped their booty about one square from where they took it. The pockets of the pants contained only a three cent piece and as they belonged to a city father, it is considered a very remarkable circumstance. It speaks well for Mr. Pagan's integrity.

THE fishing party composed of George Pagan, Ed Dix, James Pagan, Ed Padgett, Charles Theis, Ben Donaldson and Wm Stricker, after an absence of six days, returned to their home. They were encamped on DeCourcey Creek, on the Licking River. They captured 415 lbs. fish, six large turtles and four silver eels. They report fishing in that vicinity to be very good.

James Douglas Pagan was first married to Mary "Mollie" G Burney 22 June 1876 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Mollie died of "hasty consumption" just four months after their June wedding on the 18 Oct 1876. For a long time James lived with his widowed mother Ann until she died in April 1908. Then on 8 Nov 1911, James married his cousin Helen Agnes; she was 46 and had never married when James, then 59, married her.
Walter Scott Pagan married Susan W Howard and their son Walter Scott Jr. was born in Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas in 1896. The undertaker's records indicated that his body had been shipped to Kentucky from Dodge City, Kansan in 1921. His wife died in Washington DC in 1935 and Walter Scott Jr. died in a Veterans Hospital Administration Medical Center in Perry Point, Maryland in 1980. Their daughter Edna lived in Arlington Va.
Sidney Milton Pagan married Ella Brosnan 21 July 1898 in Newport, daughter of Patrick and Bridget Brosnan of Ireland. Sidney was mentioned in Ann Brosnan's will in January 1907 about him borrowing money from a Newport Building and Loan and if the loan were not repaid by her demise that that amount should come out of his share of her estate.
William Wallace Pagan married Frances A Pagan, daughter of Christian and Catherine (Reichert) Pagan from Germany. Their only child was Bertha Kathryn born in 1892. Bertha married Dr. August Helmbold 27 Nov 1912; Bertha's engagement notice said that she was a "talented musician and the only and attractive daughter of William W Pagan." Dr. August H Helmbold was born in Germany in 1863 and came to America with his parents and studied medicine, graduating from Miami University at Oxford Ohio. Later he became an alderman in Newport and in 1911 a new form of government went into effect and he was name mayor and remained so until his death July 1918, at which time he was preparing to run for Governor of Kentucky. They had two sons, William and Karl. Karl predeceased his father in death.

George M Pagan Jr. married Sallie Loraine Weaver in Aug 1877. Loraine Weaver was born 30 May 1851 in Indiana, the daughter of John Weaver and Mary Wilcox; She died 21 Feb 1923 in Dayton and was buried in Evergreen.
For years George ran a store in Newport and was affectionately known as "Ginger" because of his preppy personality. He and Sallie had three daughters and a son. The oldest daughter, Clara, married Richard Crowhurst 28 July 1903. Clara's nephew, Walter B Pagan, told Roger Douglas Ferguson, he believed she subsequently moved to Florida where she died "before 1953". All that is known of George and Anna's daughter, Loraine is that she did marry, had no children, was divorced and moved to California. Their daughter Mary E married Spencer Dameron 10 Jan 1906 and their children were Harriet, Spencer Jr. Loraine and Ruby.
Walter Douglas Pagan and Florence Meyer had three children: Florence Virginia who died young; George Henry and Walter B Pagan. Florence died 17 June 1945 and Walter Douglas died in 1953 in Pensacola, Florida.

George Sr. was on the Newport Cemetery board and instrumental in helping the cemetery move to a new location in Southgate, eventually becoming the Evergreen Cemetery. His daughter, Emma named the cemetery. He died January 5, 1893 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery. Anna Dennison Pagan died 15 Apr 1908 and was buried 18 Apr in Evergreen Cemetery. George Jr. later served on the Evergreen Cemetery board.

TO SETTLE ESTATE
William Pagan and others filed suit yesterday in the Campbell Circuit Court through Attorney C L Raison against Matilda Pagan and others to settle the estate of George Pagan, Sr. who died intestate in January 1893, leaving property on Columbia st. corner of Sixth and Washington avs. and on Washington av. Newport.

STRUCK BY CAR
George Pagan, ex-City Assessor, was struck by a York st. car shortly after noon yesterday and severely injured. Pagan had started to cross the street at Fourth and York sts. but saw the car approaching and began to retrace his steps. The car, which was north bound, struck Pagan, throwing him a distance of several feet. He was picked up in a semi-conscious condition and carried into an adjoining building, where two physicians attended him. In addition to a scalp wound, Pagan sustained bruises about the body. His condition is not serious.

Judge Makibben Assigns
"County Judge T P Makibben this morning made a deed of assignment of all of his property to Mr. George Pagan Jr. The Judge's assets are estimated at $10,050 and his liabilities $9000. Mr. Pagan accepted said trust and qualified as assignee with George Pagan and Joseph G Feth as surety. The Judge's paper the Herald will be continued by Mr. Pagan."
