Otis Burgess

Kentucky Post, Friday, 7 February 1908, page 5

Otis Burgess, 15, of 1123 Central av. Newport, was probably fatally injured while trying to board a C&O freight train, near Dayton last evening. He missed his footing and fell under the wheels of the cars. His left leg was cut off below the knee and he suffered a fracture of the skull.

When picked up by Chief Ortlieb and Fire Warden Jolly of Dayton, the lad was still conscious. He did not cry when picked up and told the officers he would never jump any more trains. He was removed to Speers Hospital in the patrol. Owing to his critical condition no operation was performed. The injured boy is an orphan and has been making his home with relatives.

At noon today physicians amputated the limb of Burgess and his recovery is doubtful owing to his weakened condition.
