The citizens of Newport were favored with a rich entertainment on last Saturday evening, when the closing exercises of the Seminary came off, in a very creditable manner at the Odd Fellows Hall. A large audience was collected at an early hour, the hall was quickly filled and more than three hundred person who had purchased tickets were unable to obtain admission.  The large attendance is indicative of the increasing interest of the people of Newport in the cause of education.

At 8 o'clock the exercises were commenced with a salutary address by Miss Hannah Purcer and this was followed by original essays from Miss M Fowler, Miss M Kautz, Miss Harriet Helm, Miss French, Miss McConnell, Miss Ross, Miss Hayman and Miss Sebastian. These productions displayed a style of composition, while the manner of delivery contributed to render them very attractive.

Mr. B F Davidson and Mr. A T Root did themselves great credit, by a display of that brilliant and impressive delivery. Some very interesting dialogues came off, called "The Tea Party" excited considerable mirth among the audience. The exhibition closed with a gold chain to Miss Hitch, by her pupils, as a token of their esteem for her and of the benefits they have derived from her valuable instructions.
