Newport High School
Newport High School 1873-1924
This school was on the corner of Ringgold and Columbia Streets, formerly the old Newport Cemetery lot. It was built in 1872, had 15 rooms and three stories. This school closed in 1924.
During the Spanish American War, Principal Charles G Hammond began recruiting and training students at Newport High School into the Hammond Rifles, an underage reserve force of forty teenagers who might be needed to fill the state militia’s shoes it if went overseas.
