NEWPORT

Yesterday evening the boys at the engine house received a handsome checker board, on the back was pasted a note bearing the following: "To our boys from Harris & Venables, D G Brambuck, J R Youngblut, A S Berry and W H Horton."

Mr. Wm Holt lost a valuable horse-valued at two hundred and fifty dollars-found dead in the stable this morning, supposed to have died from epizootle.

No Police Court this morning.

Query-How much money has John Byins to put the railroad through?

What has become of the men who received money from Mason and Lewis counties in aid of the Great Eastern Railroad?

Professor Gibson says he is opposed to high taxes

Are you and your friends in favor of the railroad, be you?

In the year of 1852 the proposition was made to the people along the border of the Ohio river to assist in the building of the Kentucky and Great Eastern Railroad.  Another railroad with open top depot and plenty of bummers on Saratoga street and people would be happy.  We understand there is a movement on foot to run a street railroad over the new railroad bridge to connect with the Pendleton Line in Cincinnati.  Good thing.

Col Mason will leave this evening for Washington on business connected with the War Department.

BARRACK NEWS

General Court Martial, which has been in session for the last ten days adjourned, sine die.

Yesterday morning Captain H Boal accidentally burnt Mr. C Roach in the cigar store of C S Rugh on York street with a taper.

It will be regretted in the neighborhood of the Barracks when the celebrated Len Harris case is decided, for then Lieutenant Cunningham will have to leave for the Pacific coast.

All the copper colored troops that are on hand at the Barracks will leave for Texas as soon as Major Douglass arrives, who is expected hourly from the coast.
