Newport Citizens Guards

At a meeting held at the Court house in Newport, on the 19th and 20th inst. of the Newport Citizens Guards in conjunction with the citizens for the purpose of raising volunteers to respond to a call of our country and fly to her assistance in a war now pending with Mexico. L M ECKHART and F A MILLER Esqs. were called to the chair and T M WINSTON appointed secretary.
Messrs. Robt Helm and James Taylor were unexpectedly called upon and addressed the meeting for some length of time in a strain of language truly eloquent and impressive and were frequently interuppted by the deafening and continued shouts of the whole meeting.
Maj. Harris said others made a few appropriate and patriotic remarks, which were received with loud and interrupted applause.
On motion is was:
Resolved, By the officers and
members of the Newport Citizens Guards, that our lists be opened to receive
Volunteers to fill up the ranks of the company to sixty rank and file or more.
Resolved, That we recommend and petition his Excellency, Wm
Owsley, Governor of Kentucky, to appoint one gallant countryman Wm O Butler
commander of the Kentucky forces.
Resolved, That we hold ourselves in readiness to obey the call of
the Governor to assist our country's cause in Texas.
Resolved, That the proceedings of this meeting be published in the
Covington and Cincinnati newspaper.
