Moritz and Maria Anna Klump

Moritz Klump was born in Mösbach, Baden, Germany, on September 2, 1820. His parents were Joseph Klump and Gertrud Kirn Klump. He was mayor of Mösbach when his son Alois was born in 1850.  He emigrated illegally.  There is no record of him ever applying for permission to leave Germany. He emigrated to Newport, Kentucky in 1853. His wife and children emigrated two years later.  His older brother, Anton, had emigrated earlier.

Moritz had married Maria Anna Birk July 22, 1844 in Mösbach, Baden, Germany. They had 8 children together.

Maria Anna Birk Klump was born Feb 6, 1817 in Mösbach, Baden, Germany to Franz Josef Birk and Katharina Jägle (Jäckle) Birk. Maria Anna died May 7, 1870 in John’s Hill. She is buried in the Old Catholic Cemetery in Wilder (John’s Hill area). Her grave is on private land now.

Moritz Klump then married a widow, Mrs. Mary Eppie (nee Gutman) on Oct 3, 1870 in Campbell co. Mary was born Jan 11, 1830 in Gasherd, Bavaria, Germany. No information is available on her first husband. And I haven’t found any children from either marriage. She died August 15, 1876 and is buried at St Joseph Cemetery, Wilder, KY. She does have a tombstone.

Moritz was a member of the German Pioneers Club in Newport. Moritz lived on Isabella street in Newport and was a saloonkeeper. He died there June 20, 1890 of cholera morbis. He is buried at St Joseph Cemetery, Wilder, Ky. He has no stone. He is not buried near either of his wives.

8. Moritz Jr. Klump b. Jun 7, 1855 Haven’t been able to find his death date.

* I have the most information on my direct line. Complicating matters is the fact that there were 3 Moritz Klumps who were born in Mösbach, Baden, Germany that emigrated to the Greater Cincinnati area. My direct ancestor was born in 1822. There was one born in 1815 and one in 1802 or 1803. Two of the Moritz Klumps are buried in St Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Wilder Ky. And they tended to use the same names for their children. I’m convinced that there is a connection between the 3 Moritz. But neither I nor my compatriot in Mösbach have been able to connect them.

I have no further information on Amalia, Ludwig, Alois, Emma or Moritz Jr. Maria Anna married Conrad Leistner and they had 5 children.

Gustave married Amelia (Emilia) Saelinger (stepdaughter of Andreas Saelinger; daughter of Andreas’ 2nd wife, Karolina Fey Basler Saelinger) April 25, 1875 in Campbell co. They had at least 14 children.

Will of Amelia Klump

Amand was probably married twice. I’ve found a death certificate for a son named John Henry (1886-1923) with mother listed as Roda Belle Wagoner. I’ve found no marriage record for them. I have found the marriage record for Amand with Katie Reuil dated Nov 13, 1889 at St Paul’s Church of Christ. Katie and Amand had 3 children.

Most of Moritz Klump’s descendants have settled in Campbell County. Some, like me have crossed the Ohio River to live.

***********

Since I submitted this family history, I have found out that Moritz Klump was actually married three times. I had seen the 1880 census with a wife named Kate and two daughters that I had not heard of.

I have verified that he was indeed married to a Catherine Krause, nee Heid. She was a widow of Henry Kraus 1835-1860 and mother of at least three daughters: Caroline 1856-1856, Louisa 1858-1922, Carrie 1860-1908 and maybe a daughter listed as Gustie born about 1865 who. (Gustie is only listed in the 1880 census with Kate & Moritz. If she had been Moritz’ daughter, it would have been with his first wife, Maria Anna Birk who died in 1870. No records exist for such a child.)

Here is the record in the local newspaper of a divorce action for that marriage

1880-07-17  Cincinnati Daily Gazette, page 3

Newport

Mrs. Kate Klump filed suit in the Circuit Court yesterday against Moritz Klump for divorce, on the grounds of drunkenness, cruel treatment, and wasting of estate.  The allegations of the petition are the the parties were married in Cincinnati in February, 1877; that she had at that time $1,150 of her own money; which she turned over to her husband; that for the past two years he has been in the habit of getting drunk and wasting his estate, and has abused her, called her names, threw beer glasses at her, and threatened her with bodily injury.

She prays judgment for $1,150 and interest, divorce, alimony, and other relief.  The defendant keeps a beer saloon at the corner of Ringgold and Isabella streets.

(similar article in Cincinnati Commercial Tribune on same day).

I have not been able to find a marriage bond or banns for this third marriage. Possibly burned in a courthouse fire.

Kate never remarried. She is buried as Catherine Klump at Spring Grove Cemetery, next to her first husband, Henry Kraus.
