Although he has been stationed in Iceland for the past 17 months, Sergt. Milford Lee Gilvin has seen much of England, Ireland and Scotland. He has reported on his travels since he arrived in northern Kentucky to spend a 10 day furlough with his wife and son at the home of his wife's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schulz, 1040 Grand avenue, Newport.

He explained the paradox by revealing he passed several furloughs in the British Isles. Sergt. Gilvin is a veteran of 8 1/2 years in the Army. He is to go to Ft Benning Ga. after his parent furlough, to attend an infrantry combat and artillery school. He has a sharpshooter medal. The visiting sergeant said because of the lack of sunshine, no fruits or vegetables are grown in Iceland. He said the few potatoes grown there are no larger than marbles.

He explained how citizens of Iceland pipe hot water from volcanic mountain flows to their homes for heating and other purposes. Home are built of concrete blocks, covered with a coating of a mixture of cement and fish scales. This not only makes them durable against the severe weather, but picturesque and attractive.

Sergt. Gilvin, who also has been stationed at Ft McClellan, Alabama, Ft Benning and Ft Custer Mich. was a member of the 10th Infantry when it was at Ft Thomas.
