Michael Murray

Cincinnati Enquirer, 2 November 1870, page 5

The excitement over the recent killing of Michael Murray in Newport still continues and since the discovery of the fact that the prisoners are determined to make a vigorous defense seems to be on the increase. A large crowd assembled in the Court house yard at an early hour yesterday morning and waited until the hour appointed for the preliminary examination.

The prisoners, Lewis Helm, Theo Gooding, Jos Wilson and George Smith, were brought into court and began consultation with their attorneys. Helm is represented by F M Webster; the other defendants by Messrs. D S Hounshell, A D Smalley and O B Hallam. The prosecution is represented by R W Nelson and W S Abert. Considerable time was occurred in discussion and finally it was decided to adjourned til half past one in the afternoon.

Upon the reassembling of the Court after dinner the witnesses were all sworn and required to retire to another room. Those under examination were Dr. W G Smith, Mrs. Henry Feulner, Wm S Abert, Richard Conklin, and James Ford.

Nothing so far, has been developed connecting any of the prisoners with the murder, except the testimony of Abert as to Wilson, but it is expected that the Commonwealth will introduce strong circumstantial evidence today.
