In the death of M V Daly, ex-mayor of Newport, an account of
which appeared in yesterday's Enquirer, that city looses one of its most
esteemed citizens.
Mr. Daly was born in Dublin Ireland, 77 years ago. In 1843 he came to America. He had a taste for the law and soon after coming to this country began the study of that profession under Don Platt. He was admitted to the bar in 1847 and practiced with what was then known as the firm of Wyckoff, Platt & Co. In those days the practice of law was not very remunerative and Mr. Daly, together with M J King, who afterward became his partner, loaded a number of canal boats with groceries and provisions and during the early fifties made considerable money in trading through the inland towns of Ohio and Indiana. He located in Newport in 1859, but moved to Cincinnati in 1861. In 1864 he again moved back to Newport where he resided until his death.
He defeated A S Berry in 1884 for Mayor of Newport, which office he held until 1886. He was President of the Southern Transportation Company from 1883 until 1888 and for his services to this company he was awarded an elegant testimonial in the shape of a set of resolutions from the various Directors and officials.
These resolutions are stamped on a brass tablet and are valued very highly by the family. During his later years he served as a Director in the Southern Pacific Railway Company, the Aetna Insurance Company, the Fireman's Insurance Company and several other insurances and banking companies in this city.
He leaves four children, Mrs. P (Emma) O'Shaughnessy, Mrs. Joseph Cloud, Mrs. Lieutenant L J Herne and John B Daly. The funeral will take place Tuesday morning from the Church of the Immaculate Conception and the interment will be at St Josephs new cemetery at Price Hill. The flags on the public landing were placed at half mast yesterday in respect to Mr. Daly's memory.
