Mentor

Campbell County, Kentucky
 

Located in the southeastern corner of the county, Mentor is bordered on one side by the Ohio River and the other by Kentucky Highway 8.  The community was settled in the 1800s and was generally known as Belmont.  The town name of Mentor was selected by postal officials after residents in the area requested a post office.

From 1908 until 1926, Mentor School was a one room building.  Located across the railroad tracks off Highway 8 in the Junior Order Masons Building, it served as the town's school until A J Jolly was built.

                    The citizens of Mentor are anxious to get a separate school district, as the children at present are compelled to walk nearly a mile over a rough road to school. Messrs. T O Kennedy, James M Daniel and John Southall have been appointed a committee to confer with the County School Superintendent and arrange to have a division of the district made.

Mentor was incorporated on October 1, 1957 as an effort by its residents to gain some zoning control over their area.  The Eastern Campbell County Fire Department is located in the Mentor area on Smith Road, and is the youngest fire department in Campbell County. It was organized early in 1964.  Some of the first firefighters and chiefs include, Bob Moore, Matt Franck, Bill Edwards, Jim Sigafoose, Richard McCormick, Peter Dougherty, and Greg Schultz.   Mentor has a population of 170.
