Melbourne Elementary School
Melbourne Elementary-was a one room school on Highway 8. In 1889 Frank P Helm conveyed two lots on 12 Mile Turnpike at Garfield Ave. for a school. In 1900 Frank Springer was a grade school teacher in Melbourne. In 1910 Malcolm Eads was a school teacher there. On June 30, 1928, the Board of Education contracted with William Filhardt for $4300 to add an addition to the school.

On June 27, 1936 the Board contracted with Walter Hasengold for $1080 to move the Ross School building and add it to the Melbourne School. When the Ross School down the road closed, they picked up the building and brought it to Melbourne, connected two buildings and refused to close the school when consolidation occurred. Some even kept their children out of school for a year.
On June 27, 1936 the Board contracted with Peck Hannaford for $997 for a heating system. In 1933 the first through eight grades were taught. Margaret Elizabeth Newman Abbott was the only student in the eighth grade to graduate that year and went on to Newport High School.
In 1940 7th and 8th grades went to Campbell County School in Alexandria. In 1945 Melbourne closed all grades and bused students to the Campbell County School in Alexandria. The building was converted to apartments.
