OLDEST MEMBER OF BAR


Matt, Herold, the oldest and one of the outstanding members of the Campbell County Bar Association and a prominent figure in local banking and building association circiles, died early Friday at Good Samaritan Hospital. Mr. Herold was 82 years old and lived at 704 Fairfield avenue, Bellevue. He had been ill for the last three months.

Mr. Herold, a native of Cincinnati came to Campbell county when a young man. While engaged in the operation of a grocery business with his parents in Bellevue, Mr. Herold studied law at the old Cincinnati College of Law. He was admitted to the practice of law 53 years ago. In his many years in the practice of law, Mr. Herold became one of the most prominent barristers in the state and attained a wide spread reputation. He was counsel for the Union light, Heat & Power Co, the Cincinnati, Newport & Covington Railway Co. and the Louisville & Nashville Railroad.

Mr. Herold also served as president of the American National Bank, Newport, for many years, and resigned a number of year ago after having served for 21 years as president of the Bellevue Commercial & Savings Bank. Mr. Herold was president of the Home Savings Loan & Building Association of Bellevue.

Mr. Herold also is a past president of the Campbell County Bar Association, past grand knight of the Newport Council, Knights of Columbus, and past exalted ruler of the Newport Lodge of Elks. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue.

Mr. Herold was the father of Vincent W Herold, president of the Campbell County Chamber of Commerce and owner of the Newport Mineral Water Co. A second son, Matt J Herold of Ft Thomas, also survives.

Funeral arrangements are being made by the A C Dobbling & Son, Bellevue funeral directors. Services will probably be held Monday, with a Requiem High Mass being sung at Sacred Heart Church.
