Mount Saint Martins Cemetery

This cemetery was originally at 1301 Monmouth Street in Newport.  We are still working to find all the names of those who were buried here. The cemetery was moved to St Anne's Convent Cemetery in Melbourne in 1918.

NEW PROVINCIAL HOUSE

OLD GRAVEYARD ADJOINED MT. ST. MARTIN CONVENT

An old cemetery adjoining Mt. St. Martin convent at Thirteenth and Monmouth streets-Newport, where many of the Sisters of the Divine Providence are buried, has been abandoned.  The bodies were removed to the burying ground adjoining the new Provincial house, now nearing completion at Melbourne, Campbell County.  The last of the 31 bodies was transferred Thursday.  The old cemetery had been used as a burying place during the last 27 years.

The new structure will be known as the Provincial House, which will be the mother house of the order in the United States.  The original home of the order was in Metz until taken over by the Germans for a hospital.  Mother Marie, provincial of the order, on a tour of inspection of the branch houses in the United States, was at the Academy  Notre Dame of Providence, Newport, at the time possession was taken of the house in Metz.  She will return as soon as permitted by the Government.
