Information comes from various sources, newspapers, census, marriage and burial records.

Martin Matting was born 21 Mar 1840 in Germany, immigrating with his family in 1846. He served during the Civil War in the 7th Regiment Indiana. Martin enlisted 22 Aug 1861. He was sent immediately to West Virginia where his regiment jointed other forces at Webster. The 7th took the advance upon Philippi, Co B driving the enemy's pickets back. When the regiment entered the town on the double quick followed by the column, the enemy was being driven from the town.  Martin remained in camp here for six weeks, engaged in scouting and then marched to Belington, where it engaged for three days in heavy skirmishes.

Martin's regiment joined in the pursuit of the enemy, and overtaking him at Carrick's ford, the 7th charged and captured his baggage.  Overtaking the fleeing forces again at the next ford, the 7th again defeated him, Gen. Garnett, commanding the enemy, being killed.  The unite was reorganized on Sep 13 in Indianapolis, leaving the state for Western Virginia and joining Gen. Reynold's command at Cheat Mountain.

Martin was in the battle of Winchester Heights, at Port Republic and Front Royal and back.  He was in the Campaign of the Army of Virginia participating at Cedar Mountain, and the second battle of Bull Run.  He joined in the pursuit of Lee through Maryland and was in the battle of Antietam.  He fought at Ashby's gap and participated in the battle of Fredericksburg.  Martin mustered out 6 Mar 1863.

After his service in the war, he married Louise Scholsmire on 9 Nov 1864 in Clay Co, Indiana. She was born 29 Oct 1846 in Indiana, the daughter of Henry Scholsmire and Mary L Opp.
