Kentucky Post, Friday, 29 May 1908, page 5

Martin Blackwell, 72, veteran of the Civil War, died last night at Speers Hospital following an amputation of his left leg. Blackwell, while serving in the Rebellion, was shot in the leg and the wound never healed.

Several weeks ago gangrene set in and he was removed to the hospital to have the limb amputated as a last means of saving his life but it was of no avail. He had been a resident of Newport since the war and was well known. He was a member of William Nelson Post, GAR and is survived by a family of grown children.
