Mabel Link Schum

Kentucky Post, Friday, 7 July 1911, page 1

William Schum, city fireman, who committed suicide Thursday by drinking carbolic acid after making an attempt to kill his wife, Mrs. Mabel Schum, at their home 2351 Eastern av. Cincinnati, had made all preparations the day before the tragedy for filing suit for divorce.

According to Attorney William Thorndyke, he was also contemplating the filing of a $10,000 alienation of affections suit against a Syrian merchant, whom he believed to be responsible for his unhappiness. The Syrian's name is E Sallee, who had been sending postal cards to Mrs. Schum from his home in Bamallah, Jerusalem. A letter had been delivered to the husband because it was addressed to Miss Mabel Schum and the postal authorities had been unable to find any such person.

Several fellow firemen at the Gifts Engine House found him weeping on several occasions and he had confided the cause of his trouble to several of them. Although one of the bullets fired at her inflicted a scalp wound, Mrs. Schum's condition is not considered serious. She has claimed her husbands body for burial and the funeral will be held from the Schum home Saturday with fellow firemen among the pallbearers.
