The ash cart and other employees of the city stables and street hands, numbering about 10 in all, have had trouble with Superintendent of Public Works Louis Krebs. They all quit and when they called for their money a strike was said to be on. Krebs filled their places.

Superintendent of Public Works Louis Krebs and his assistant, Charles Pryor, were injured in a runaway accident Wednesday afternoon. They were driving a spirited horse on Central Avenue, Newport, and when nearing Seventh Street the animal became frightened. The driver was unable to stop it and the buggy upset, throwing the occupants to the ground.  Pryor escaped with a few slight bruises but Krebs has a bad gash over his eye and a wrenched back.

Louis Krebs, Superintendent of Public Works in Newport, was assaulted late Saturday night at his home, 825 Central Avenue. His assailant, it is alleged, was Charles Swaite of West Tenth Street. Krebs claims that Swaite was dropped from the city force of employees and on Saturday night called on him and wanted to be reinstated. Krebs came to the front door and got on the sidewalk to talk with Swaite. An argument followed and Krebs claims Swaite struck him several times in the face.

Mayor Helmbold of Newport, Thursday night reappointed Louis M Krebs as Superintendent of Public Works for a period of two years. Supt. Krebs was appointed to the office two years ago by former Mayor R W Nelson to succeed W L Glazier who was at that time appointed Superintendent of the Newport Water Works.

It is understood that Superintendent of Public Works Louis M Krebs will send his resignation as such official to the Newport Board of Alderman. Krebs has been named as the Chief of the Fire Department to succeed John Waters and will be sworn in by Mayor Helmbold as soon as his resignation goes to the Alderman.

Krebs will enter upon his duties as Fire Chief Saturday.

Fire Chief Louis Krebs, who has been an inmate of St Elizabeth Hospital for the past two months, suffering with a compound fracture of his right leg has recovered sufficiently to be taken to his home in Newport.

He will leave the hospital tomorrow and his physicians expect him to be able to report for duty within another month. The Fire Chief's injury was due to an accident. He was driving along Monmouth st. Newport, in his fire wagon when one of the axles broke, letting down the vehicle, causing the animal he was driving to run off.

Krebs was dragged for considerable distance, sustaining injuries that for a time endangered his life.

It's Fire Chief Police Fred Schmidt now, having been elected to that position last night by the Newport Police and Fire Commissioners. Fire Chief Louis Krebs sent in his resignation and Superintendent of Public Works succeeds him. Krebs will step into the place vacate by Schmidt, which he formerly held before he became Fire Chief. In a letter to the Commissioners Krebs states the injuries sustained in a runaway accident some time ago incapacitated him from duty in the Fire Department and he felt it was a duty he owed to the citizens that he tender his resignation.

Worry over the death of his wife which occurred three weeks ago is believed to be partially responsible for the death Friday of Louis M Krebs, 73, former Newport Fire Chief and Superintendent of Public Works, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harry Eicholz, 133 W Fifth st. Newport.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 9 am at the Immaculate Conception Church, Fifth st. and Central av. Newport. Burial will be in St Stephen Cemetery. Krebs always a strong believer in the Democratic Party took an active part in the management of party affairs in Newport. During the administration of the late Mayor R W Nelson he served as superintendent of public works, succeeding W L Glazier. When August Helmbold became the chief executive of the city, Krebs was made chief of the Fire Department.

After retiring from public life he worked at his trade, that of a stationary engineer. Until the death of his wife he resided at 28 W 10th st. Newport. Krebs is survived by two sons, Louis, furniture finisher of 313 Central av. Newport and Elmer, electrician, of 352 Berry av. Bellevue; Mrs. Eleanor Arbogast of 351 Berry av. Bellevue; Mrs. Celeste Anderson of New York and Mrs. Eichholz.
