DEATH OF LEWIS CONSTANS

Lewis Constans, formerly City Treasurer of Newport, passed away at his home, at 20 West Third Street, at 10:30 o'clock last night. Mr. Constans had retired to his room and his wife remained downstairs heard him call. Hurrying to his side she found him suffering from a violent hemorrhage. Dr. Barker and Southgate were summoned, but could do nothing to relieve the man and he passed away shortly after their arrival.

Lewis Constans was 60 years of age at the time of his death and was most prominent for many years in local politics. In 1876 he was elected as Mayor of the city, but in 1878 he resigned the office, stating that he intended to bid farewell to politics. In 1884 he again entered the political arena and was elected to the position of City Treasurer. In 1886 he was again elected to the same position for a two year term and was succeeded in 1888 by ex-Congressman A S Berry.

After his term expired he retired to private life and was employed as a bookkeeper at the time of his death. A widow and seven children survive him; four daughters, Clara, Carrie and Margaret Constans and Mrs. Stuckwisch and three sons; Lewis, formerly Superintendent of the Newport Waterworks, but at present in St Louis, Edward and Barker Constans. A telegram was sent to Lewis Constans Jr. last night advising him of his father's death.
