NEWPORT SALOON KEEPER
George Lohr, 27, a saloon keeper at Seventh and Columbia-sts.
Newport, is being held by the police as a fugitive from justice. Acting on
information from the Covington Police Department, Lohr was taken into custody
this morning by Sergt. Cottingham. The Covington police hold a warrant for Lohr
based on the affidavit of Johnny Feeney, son of Chas Feeney of Third and
Bakewell sts. that city, in which it is alleged that Lohr obtained money by
false pretenses.
Young Feeney alleges that Lohr called at the saloon last Friday night and gave a check for $3.61 which he cashed. When presented at the Citizens National Bank, Covington, it is alleged it was turned down as worthless. When taken to Police Headquarters Lohr told Sergt. Cottingham that the check was given to him by one of his customers. Further investigation by the Newport police shows that Lohr will have to explain some check transactions in this city.
Andrew Livingston, cigar dealer of York st. was a caller at Police headquarters. He holds a check given him by Lohr which he alleges is worthless. Phil Gerke, a Newport saloon keeper, also lodged a complaint against Lohr on a check transaction. In searching Lohr a check drawn on the German National Bank of Newport, was found signed John C Morgan. Lohr said to the police that the check was given to him but that it turned out to be worthless.
