Sgt. Leonard Gunkel, 24, son of Mrs. A Gunkel of 828 Roberts
street, Newport, is now recuperating in an English hospital from injured
suffered Oct 8 while serving with the Engineers Battalion in France, it was
learned here.
Entering the Army in August 1942, he has been overseas for 20 months. He is suffering from two fractures of the right leg, a dislocated hip and face cuts. A veteran of the Italian and North African campaigns, Sgt. Gunkel was wounded in action in the fighting in Italy.
