NEWPORT
Leo Hutzel, 10, residing at 1120 Orchard street, died yesterday
from the same dread disease as Leonard Dreiling. Both boys had been vaccinated
and persons opposed to the vaccination will find in the deaths an argument
against the practice. Both deaths were similar in that the disease developed
rapidly and caused death in fearful agony. The Hutzel boy's body was bent out of
all semblance to a human before death relieved him from his sufferings.
There is nothing to prove that the tetanus germs were introduced through the abrasion made by the vaccination, except that no other sores or wounds were found on the body. Dr. J J Youtsey, who attended both cases of tetanus, said last night that he hoped parents would not become unduly alarmed because of the two deaths. He said that the Hutzel boy had been vaccinated at least four weeks ago and that there was nothing to show that the teanic germ had been introduced. The germ had to find some place of abrasion and that there might be some wound on another portion of the body so slight that it was not discovered.
