Lt. Col Lawrence J Hearn, US Army, son of the late Major James A Hearn, of Newport, died at the Army Hospital, San Francisco, Cal. Last April he contracted fever on board a Government transport returning from the Philippines and had since been confined at the hospital. His mother and sister, and his wife were at his bedside when he died. Col. Hearn was an authority on small arms in use in combat and because of his knowledge in this regard he was assigned to the Rock Island area for many years, where practically all the small arms and ammunition are kept.

He recently purchased a ranch in Logan Colo. and it was his purpose to remove his family there after his retirement. He was promoted to the rank of Lt. Colonel for valiantry during the Spanish American War. He also won honors for valorous service in several Indian campaigns. He had a sister Mrs. Gerald O'Brian living in Pittsburg. He was made a second Lieutenant in the army in 18880 and cavalry school in 1885. Col. Hearn would have retired in five years.
