Martin and Mary Kort

Mathias or Martin (as he was called in the American way) Kort was born 2 November 1845 in Brutting, Trier, Rhenish, Prussia, the son of Mathaus Kort. He immigrated to the United States in 1854. When the Civil War was near the end, he enlisted in 1865 in the 196th Ohio Infantry. This regiment organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, March 25th, 1865 in serve one year. Martin immediately started for western Virginia, where he was assigned to the Ohio Brigade at Winchester. Here he remained until July when he was ordered to Baltimore and assigned to duty in the fortifications around that city, a portion of his regiment being sent to Fort Delaware. He mustered out Sep 11, 1865.
Martin Kort married Anna Maria Rosemeier 15 Apr 1868 in St Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church in Melbourne. Mary was born 16 May 1851 in Hunteburg, Wittlar, Germany, the daughter of Heinrich Rosemeier and Mary Black. They immigrated in 1859.
