"Kid" Layland, the retired Color Sergeant of the Second Infantry since 1901 is packing up for a long visit to his brother in New Jersey. The Kid still clings to his famous souvenir, the trumpet, in its battered condition, as it was shot from his mouth while he was sounding the charge at Santiago.
