Katie Ryan

Kentucky Post, Saturday, 6 July 1895, page 6

Katie Ryan, aged 14, of 229 West Ninth Street, Newport, attempted suicide at 1 pm. She had been visiting her aunt in Sedamsville and left a pair of garters. When she came home her stepmother, Mrs. John Ryan, wife of the well known Newport plumber, sent her back to Sedamsville and told her to get the garters.

The girl went as directed, failed to find the garters and upon returning to Newport, went to the Licking River and jumped in opposite the United States dredge boat. Her act was seen by an employee, Park Janes, who jumped in and rescued the girl as she was sinking. She stated that she tried to commit suicide because she feared a whipping.
