Katherine and George Goodfriend

Kentucky Post, Wednesday, 21 December 1904, page 7

A mother of but two weeks and a half made a horrible discovery early Wednesday in Dayton Ky. Mrs. George Goodfriend, 132 Fourth av. and her husband awoke at 6:30 to find their baby dead. It had died while they were asleep and the shock has utterly prostrated the couple.

Katherine Hauger had been married but a year to Goodfriend and gave birth to a boy baby 17 days ago. It was expected to be a joy to the young couple and was seemingly healthy. The mother stated to a Post reporter: "At 12:30 I nursed the baby and he seemed all right and he was laying between myself and his father. Nothing seemed wrong with him and we both fell asleep. At 6:30 today my mother, Mrs. Hauger awoke and came into our room to stir up the fire. This awoke me and I looked at baby and to my horro found him dead. I screamed and we sent for Dr. Gould but he [was] passed saving and evidently had died during the few hours that we had slept. It's an awful shock to me, as it is my only child and while the baby had suffered from throat trouble, we did not consider it to be serious."

The young mother, who is not over 19 years of age, broke down and wept. The father is a member of Bridge Builders Union 26, Cincinnati. The funeral will be held this afternoon.
