NEWPORT
Mrs. Julia Thompson, 72, widow of General James Thompson, who was
a prominent figure in the Union Army during the Civil War, died yesterday at
Speers Hospital after a lengthy illness. Pneumonia was the predisposing
cause of death, although Mrs. Thompson had been suffering from a stroke of
paralysis that came upon her when she came from Washington last January to
attend the funeral of Judge Albert S Berry.
Mrs. Thompson was a brilliant and highly polished woman of lovely disposition. Her maiden name was Taliaferro and she was a first cousin of Mrs. Albert S Berry, Mrs. Albert S Root and the mother of ex-State Senator W H Dyer. Her husband was an artillery officer of great reputation during the Civil War, and her son Major John F Thompson, is now connected with the Ordnance Department of the United States army, with headquarters at Washington.
The arrangements for the funeral are being
delayed until he arrives in Cincinnati. He was at once notified of his
mother's death and it is expected that he will arrive here some time today.
Of late years Mrs. Thompson has been a resident of Washington with her son but
she was best known in Campbell County. She was born and raised on Third
street in the house now occupied by the family of L C Maddux.
