WAR OVER DROWNED BOY
War has been declared between the Coroner of Campbell-co. and the
Coroner of Kenton-co. as the result of a drowning in the Licking River
yesterday.
Joseph Schuchter, of Isabella-st, Newport, the 19-year-old son od Anton
Schuchter, well-known contractor, was drowned yesterday afternoon in the Licking
River near the mouth of Bank Lick Creek, where he had gone with a number of
companions for a swim. Schuchter waded into the stream, and, it appeared to
those nearest him, was seized with cramps almost as soon as he entered the
water, for he disappeared almost before he had waded out to his depth. The body
was recovered later in the evening by Ben Tannebeck, of Newport.
Coroner Digby, of Campbell-co., was telephoned, as was also Coroner Wise, of Kenton-co., it appears. Before Dr. Digby reached the scene of the drowning, Dr. Wise appeared and forthwith, with a crew of four, launched his boat from the Kenton-co. shore, crossed the Licking and, it is alleged, with his jack-knife the doughty Coroner cut the body from its Campbell-co. moorings and towed it over to within the jurisdiction of the aforesaid Coroner Wise.
Digby’s deputy arrived in time to see the undertaker’s wagon taking the body to Covington. Dr. Wise held an inquest at Huff’s undertaking establishment, in Covington, and returned a verdict of accidental drowning.
Dr. Digby says he will hold an inquest upon the soil of Campbell-co.
