Josephus Painter

Kentucky State Journal, Thursday, April 18, 1889

Josephus Painter was born June 24, 1836, died at his home April 15, 1889 at 4:15 am; age 52 years, 9 months and 2 days.  The funeral discourse was delivered by Rev C M Cooper at the church here.  There was scarcely standing room in the house while a large crowd thronged the outside.

He was interred in the old family burying ground just back of his boyhood home.  He united with the church, when only twelve years old and has ever since (over forty years) lived an exemplary christian life; he was enormous, sympathetic and kind; always jovial, always had a kind and encouraging word and smile for all whom he met, strictly honest in all business transactions; he had no known enemy; he was trusted, loved and highly esteemed by all who knew him; his friends were legion.

The deceased leaves a wife and nine children to mourn the loss of a kind husband, a loving and indulgent father and in their sad bereavement they have the sympathy and condolence of the entire neighborhood which feels the loss of one of its noblest citizens.

Life's duty done, as sinks the day,
Light from its load the spirit flies;
While Heaven and Earth combine to say
How blest the righteous when he dies.
