AGED MAN IS KILLED BY TRAIN
Samuel Goodfriend, 70, Meets Death in Newport
BODY IS FOUND BY CREW
Believed Victim Failed to Hear Train
Dr. Walter B. Hughes, Campbell-co coroner, Friday was investigating the circumstances surrounding an accident which resulted Thursday night in Joseph Goodfriend, 70, of 929 Central-av., Newport, being run down and killed by a C.&O. R.R. train on the siding at the head of Columbia-st., Newport.
Goodfriend’s body was found about 7:30 p.m. by the crew of a pusher engine which had just been cut off from a passenger train. It is thought probable that Goodfriend, who was hard of hearing, stepped from the main track to the siding on hearing a train which was coming from the main line onto the sidetrack to give clearance to a passenger train.
Born and reared in Newport, Goodfriend has resided in that city all his life. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Goodfriend; a daughter, Mrs. Catherine Higgins, who lives at home; and Frank, residing at Sixth and Overton streets, Newport. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
NOTE: His first name is listed as Joseph at St Stephen Cemetery.
