DEATH AS A RELIEF

After lingering for three hours and a half in terrible agony from being crushed by the wheels of a west bound Bellevue and Dayton car, Joseph Connolly, 5, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Connolly of 175 Rhensford Street, Bellevue, died at 2:30 p Wednesday. The little fellow was playing about the corner of Fairfield and Lafayette Avenues and it is said, was chasing a kitten when the accident occurred. He ran directly toward the side of the car, according to the testimony of bystanders and before Motorman William Hoffman knew of the predicament of the child, the latter was under the wheels.

The car was going slow when the accident occurred so as to allow a passenger to get on and the car was easily brought to a standstill. When it stopped the boy was under the real wheel and it was necessary to raise the car in order to get him out. He was hurried to Speers Hospital in Dayton, where Drs. Young, Stine, Schoolfield and several others worked hard to save his life, but it was noticed that he was sinking and not much hope was entertained for his recovery.

The boy was conscious after being extricated from under the car, but made no complaint of his injuries. Coroner Higgins of Newport was summoned and held a verdict according with the facts as stated.

The funeral will take place Friday at 9 am with services at St Anthony Church. Rev Father Kehoe will officiate at a requiem high mass, after which the remains will be laid to rest in St Joseph Cemetery, Price Hill.
