Joseph
Ackerman

Joseph Ackerman, 65, a farmer living on the Twelve Mile Pike, 13 miles from Newport, met a frightening death near Gubser Mill Wednesday night. He was driving a spirited team of horses when he fell headlong over the dashboard. His heels caught in the harness. The horses broke into a gallop and ran away.
Ackerman was powerless to extricate himself and he was dragged by the horses, his head bouncing over the stone road. For two miles he was dragged along before a farmer stopped the team. Ackerman's head was crushed beyond recognition. He lived for an hour before death relieved him. He leaves a widow and 14 children.
