Joseph and Madeline Haas

 

Information comes from the Haas family files at the Campbell County Historical & Genealogical Society in Alexandria.

 

Joseph Haas Sr. was born in Oberkirchen, Baden Germany and his wife’s name was Madeline. He had three sons also born in Oberkirchen who immigrated to the United States in 1870; Joseph Jr., Leopold and Charles. Joseph Jr. was studying to be a priest in the Catholic Church, but when his mother died, he left the seminary and to avoid the military draft left Germany with his two brothers eventually settling in Newport.

Joseph Haas Jr. was born in 1853 in Baden Germany and died 7 July 1938 in Ft Thomas. He married Elizabeth Wald 1 Oct 1874 at the St Johns United Church of Christ in Newport. They spent their early married years living in Newport but later moved to 125 Dixie Place in Ft Thomas.  Elizabeth was born 5 Jan 1853 in Gehaus, Germany, the daughter of Frederick Christian and Henrietta Wald. Her father was a farmer. She immigrated to the United States in 1867 and lived on Saratoga Street in Newport with an aunt. She died 9 Dec 1920 in Clifton and both she and Joseph were buried in Evergreen.

2. Charles Haas born 5 Aug 1876 in Newport and died 28 Apr 1946 in Mansfield Oh. He married Wilhelmina Derschael 4 June 1902 in Mansfield. Charles was employed by a watch company in Newport before moving to Mansfield where he worked at the North American Watch Company as a gold plater. In July 1943 he went to work for the Humphrey Manufacturing Company.
3. Joseph Haas was born 6 Jan 1878 in Newport and died 6 Jan 1969 in Ft Thomas. He married Clara Hoeffler 27 June 1900 in Newport. They resided in Newport and then in Ft Thomas. Joseph Haas established the National Band and Tag Company in Newport in 1903. He died 25 Jan 1968 in Ft Thomas.

Leopold Haas was born Nov 1858 in Baden Germany, was naturalized 4 Aug 1879 in Campbell Co and died 2 Dec 1932 in Pleasanton Cal. He married Amelia E Geyer 15 Dec 1878 at the St Johns United Church of Christ in Newport. Both Leopold and Amelia are buried in Milan Missouri.

 Charles (Carl) Haas was a sheet metal worker born 14 Feb 1859 in Germany. He was naturalized 31 Oct 1896 in Cook Co Illinois. He died 3 Mar 1949 in Omaha, Neb. He married Elizabeth Schmidt 5 June 1882 in Newport. Elizabeth and Charles had been acquainted in Germany and traveled to the United States on the same ship. Shortly after marriage they moved to Omaha Neb. where Charles operated his own contracting business.

2. Helen Haas born 13 July 1886 in Omaha; died 23 Mar 1913 in a tornado which struck Omaha while she was visiting her parents. M-Charles Nouns 5 May 1911 and they operated a pharmacy in Elkhorn Neb. They had no children.
