DAY OF SPORT
John Wessel, 35, of 914 John st. Newport, was almost instantly killed last night at the head of Vine st. by falling from a C&O passenger train. Wessel was one of a part that went to Phoenix Grove to witness a game of ball and was returning home when he met his death.
He was standing on the car platform talking to Harry Dreis, 822 Dayton st. when the car lurched as it struck the curve at that point. Wessel lost his balance and fell. As he dropped from the car he clutched at his friend, but his hand closed in space and his body disappeared at the side of the rapidly moving train.
As soon as possible the train was stopped and Wessel was picked up. He died in a few minutes. Coroner Digby was notified and discovered that the dead man's skull was fractured. The remains were then removed to Betz's Morgue. Wessel was single and was the sole support of his widowed mother.
