JOHN W BROWN, drum major of the Newport Barracks Band, died
yesterday morning at seven o'clock, of consumption. He served during the
rebellion in an Indiana regiment and was taken prisoner and sent to
Andersonville.
He served one term of three years in the Fifteenth United States Infantry and was discharged as a Sergeant. He re-enlisted at the barracks about two years ago and was made drum major. He was highly respected by all his comrades.
