The issuing of a call for a special meeting of the Newport and Police and Fire Board by Mayor Helmbold for tonight has started all sorts of rumors that there are changes to be made in the Fire Department. The talk is Fire Chief John Waters is marked for decapitation. Fire Chief Waters was asked concerning his talked of removal but he was in the dark as to what would take place at tonight's meeting.
Chief Waters has been with the department for 13 years and has made a most efficient official. He has brought the Newport department up to its present high standing and his removal, if it does take place, will not meet with the approval of the citizens.
