NEWPORT DEATH

John Steinhauer, 48, for many years employed as a motorman by the SC & C Street Railway Company, died yesterday at his home, 111 West Eleventh street of general debility. His death recalls an act of heroism that he performed that had he not been of an understanding, might have gained for him the right to wear a Carnegie medal for bravery.

While taking a Dayton car up the Broadway hill a big double truck traction car that had almost gained the top of the hill got beyond the motorman's control and started down the hill with a big load of passengers at a terrific rate of speed. Nothing but Steinhauer's coolness and nerve prevented a terrible accident. He continued up the hill for a short distance and then allowed his car to drop down the hill again til it had checked the momentum of the runaway car. He began applying the power he managed to bring both cars to a stop.

The arrangement for the funeral has not been completed. After being incapacitated for duty on the road, the street car company as a reward for his faithful service pensioned him by appointing him toll collector on the Eleventh street bridge.
