Dr. John Frank Reitz 1996 obituary

22 April 1996

In the early days of Dr. John F Reitz's practice, medical fees were considerably different from what they are today "He charged 1 for an office visit, and $2 for a house call. Deliverying a baby was $25." said Dr. Reitz's wife, Ida Lee Youtsey Reitz. Dr. Reitz, 81, of Ft Thomas, died Saturday at St Luke Hospital East, Ft homas. He was in medical practice for more than 50 years and his profession was to lead to his marriage.

"He was an intern at Speers Hospital and I was a registered nurse and supervisor there" said Mrs. Reitz. Dr. Reitz went to Covington Latin School, then Xavier University and the Eclectic College of Medicine in Cincinnait, said a former classmate from Latin school, dr. Mark Schwegman of Ft Thomas. "A patient once noticed his diploma and wondered if he were an electrician," said Mrs. Reitz.

Her husband had been retired about 10 years and had been on the staff of Speers Hospital and later St Luke. For many years his general practice was on Ninth Street in Newport, between Monmouth and Saratoga Streets, where he treated thousands of patients. Earlier Dr. Reitz was affiliated with a public health agency and would visit schools and orphanges to treat young patients. Dr. Reitz's interests were largely related to medicine and his family. He was a home person.

Other survivors include a son Chris J Reitz of Newport; a daughter, Mary Lou Kramer of Ft Thomas and four grandchildren. Services will be at noon Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft Thomas. Visitation will be from 10 am Tuesday until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
