Ill and stranded at San Francisco is the present lot of John J Pryor of Newport. Although only 18 years of age, Pryor has seen much of the world. When the Sixth Infantry left for the Philippine Islands, during the Spanish War, young Pryor accompanied the regiment as its mascot. He shared in the trials and hardships of the soldiers and saw much of the fighting that the Sixth was engaged in.

When the regiment returned young Pryor remained at San Francisco, where he started out to make a living for himself. Nothing had been heard of him for a number of months until today, when Officer William Cottingham of the Newport Police Department, received a letter from him, telling of his distressed condition and requesting that aid be sent him to enable him to return to Newport.. Young Pryor states in his letter that the hardships endured in the campaign in the Philippines made him a physical wreck and he wants to get back to Newport where he has relatives.

Pryor is a son of Hugh Pryor, a former prosperous grocer, now deceased. His mother is still living and resides in Newport. Officer Cottingham has started a subscription to send to Pryor and it is likely that he will be brought to his home within 10 days.
